Industrial IoT & Digital Twins Architecture

IIoT Digital Twins AWS IoT Databricks Edge Computing Microservices

An architectural framework for scalable cloud microservices, edge computing telemetry pipelines, and data-driven Digital Twin solutions in smart manufacturing environments.

Architecture Overview & Technical System Design

Modern Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platforms bridge the gap between physical Operational Technology (OT) on assembly lines and enterprise Information Technology (IT) in the cloud. By pairing low-latency edge gateways with distributed cloud analytics, smart manufacturing facilities achieve real-time visibility, automated telemetry streaming, and predictive operational insights.

Core Architectural Pillars

  • Edge-to-Cloud Telemetry Streaming: Deploying event-driven streaming pipelines using MQTT, OPC-UA, and Kafka protocols to ingest high-frequency sensor metrics, PLC state signals, and environmental data from automated production lines into central data lakes.
  • Scalable Cloud Microservices: Designing decoupled, containerized microservices on AWS to manage ingestion workloads, asynchronous data transformation, device registry management, and downstream API orchestration.
  • Digital Twin Analytics & Modeling: Constructing dynamic Digital Twins of industrial assets on Databricks distributed clusters. These state-space representations continuously evaluate machine health parameters for anomaly detection and predictive maintenance.
  • OT/IT System Convergence: Integrating legacy Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), SCADA systems, and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) with cloud APIs while upholding industrial cybersecurity, network segmentation, and data isolation protocols.
